It includes 75 contributing buildings. The district encompasses the old town center of Fairfield, roughly along Old Post Road between U.S. Route 1 and Turney Road. The area contains Fairfield's town hall, public library, and houses dating from the late 18th century. The district, along with Greenfield Hill Historic District and Southport Historic District, is monitored by the Historic District Commission of Fairfield.
